Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that has a different impact on each person -no one with ASD is exactly the same as another.
In general, it presents its own characteristics, such as: hypersensitivity, communication difficulties, discomfort with changes and transitions and the need for routine and stigmatization by those who don’t know about the disorder.
To fully meet the needs of children with ASD and promote inclusion, it is important to have accurate information about their strengths and challenges. mainly those of their development at different stages of their life.
That is the reason why today we want to clear up some common myths about autism spectrum disorder:
Myth: People with ASD can’t establish relationships.
• FACT: Although social interaction is affected in people with ASD, this does not mean that they cannot establish relationships with others.
People with ASD can and do have satisfying relationships with family, friends, spouses, and children. They will only require adequate support and assistance.
Myth: People with autism are gifted.
• FACT: ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs on a spectrum, therefore it includes a wide range of functioning characteristics.
Although we previously discussed the link between people with autism and giftedness, there is no general rule that suggests that everyone on the spectrum has this characteristic.
Myth: Autism is a type of intellectual deficiency or mental disorder.
• FACT: ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects behavior, social interaction, and communication. It isn’t a form of intellectual disability or a mental disorder
• Myth: ASD can be cured or overcome with age.
• FACT: People with autism can learn to manage their symptoms and realize their full potential with the right interventions and support.
Reality of living with autism
As it is evident, life with autism demands constant attention to teach our Kiddos all the skills they require to achieve their independence, and in general, A BRIGHTER LIFE WITH AUTISM.
Well-being is a broad term that might feel distant sometimes but that s possible with family support, which plays a fundamental role in this process.
