Looking for Sensory Play Activities to keep your Super Kiddos entertained during this summer?
Holidays are here and many parents are looking for ways to keep their children entertained. This article provides ideas for a season full of fun and learning.
Sensory integration complements ABA Therapy by using sensorimotor activities to improve a child’s ability to process and integrate different sensations.
Sensory stimulation activities provide significant benefits for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by improving mood, reducing stress and anxiety, enhancing concentration and learning, and developing social and communication skills.
Here are 3 Ideas of Sensory Play for you to try:
1. Sensory experiment with colored bags
- Materials needed: flat surface, red, blue, and yellow paints, transparent plastic sandwich bags, Scotch tape.
- Steps: To begin with, place different paint colors in the corners of the bags (dotted). Next, seal them with tape, and let kids mix and squish the paints to create new colors.
This activity is not only fun but also educational as children can discuss textures and colors while they play and develop a better understanding of artistic expression.
2. Build a unique lair
- Materials: pop-up tent (ex), cushions, flashing lights, colorful blankets, glow-in-the-dark toys.
- Steps: First, set up the tent in a cozy corner of your home. Next, decorate it with your child using colorful blankets, pillows, and string lights. Finally, enjoy an immersive sensory experience in your own space, creating lasting memories with your little one.
Overall, this fun and creative activity is sure to bring joy and excitement to your family time.
3. Make a unique work of art
- Materials: newspaper or absorbent paper, containers with water, children’s paint or food coloring.
- Steps: To begin, lay out the paper. Next, dilute the paint in water. Then, let your child paint and create their own masterpiece.
This simple art project is a great way to foster creativity and imagination in children.
When it comes to fun, it’s never enough!
In addition, other ideas include:
- Sensory Slime Time: Many children with autism enjoy sensory play, which is why slime is a popular choice for engaging them in activities that stimulate their senses.
- Shaving Cream Art: For outdoor play, consider participating in shaving cream art. This activity combines the sensory experience of shaving cream with creativity. Simply mix shaving cream with food coloring (the one we recommend in the third activity) and use your hands and feet to create fun art in the sun.
- Sensory Board Games: On days when you need a break from outdoor play or want to keep your child busy indoors, sensory board games are a fantastic option. These games provide a balance between fun and skill development.
Some examples of sensory board games are: Kerplunk (fine motor skills), Soggy Doggy (sensory) or Feed the Woozle (gross motor skills).
By engaging your child in these activities, you are not only providing entertainment, but also promoting their cognitive and physical development in a fun and interactive way.
Additionally, these interactive activities can help enhance your child’s problem-solving skills and foster a sense of creativity. They are a great way to support your child’s overall development while having fun together.
The possibilities for indoor and outdoor sensory play activities are endless. Use your imagination to create engaging sensory experiences for your children.
